Instead, look for hair shears that have convex-edged blades. Most quality professional hair shears will have this style blade. This blade style requires less force to cut the hair, resulting in faster work and less stress on the hand. They are also far more suitable for varying the types of cutting and work well for modern cutting techniques.
The blade steel is also significant when choosing quality hair sheers. Titanium, cobalt alloy and triple tempered stainless steel are common metals used in forging professional shears. Look for a Rockwell hardness rating of at least 55 to 62, as indicated for very hard steel. Keep in mind that the harder the metal, the longer the blades will stay sharp. Dull scissors are difficult to cut with; they pull and break the hair rather than cutting it, resulting in split ends and poor quality cuts.
When choosing a size, base your selection on the size of your own hands as well as the weight and ergonomic feel of various sizes and styles. Most stylists use shears between 5 and 6 inches. You can add different lengths as you gain experience and hone techniques by building your collection to include longer or shorter shears. You will also become accustomed to specific handle styles, finger rests and weights.
Purchasing high-quality hair shears is an investment. Just as an artist needs a quality brush or a carpenter needs quality tools, a hairstylist needs quality shears to perform their best work. Scissors that bend the hair before cutting through it or pull when performing specialty techniques are not going to produce high-quality hair cuts. As a professional, satisfied clients are the bread and butter of your business. Your clients must be satisfied with your work in order for them to return, so equip yourself with tools that make your job easy and allow you to perform up to your skill level.
Selecting quality hair shears requires a bit of research and knowledge of ergonomics. Most shears have finger rings for adjusting size and can be purchased for right-handed or left-handed stylists. Ask other professional stylists if you can test out their shears to get a feel for the size and weight that works for you. Also be sure to locate a professional sharpener that can sharpen your shears as needed. Remember this is an added maintenance expense so invest in quality metals to avoid the expense and hassle of frequent sharpening.
